To my Father – A man of peace

Mark the blameless and behold the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.

Psalm 37:37

It was a normal day around our home. I had just returned from running errands, it was mid-morning and I laid down for a short nap before having to leave the house again. My phone kept buzzing over and over and I just ignored it. All of the sudden, my husband comes in the room and tells me it’s urgent and I need to call my mom…

I knew

As I picked up the phone, I grabbed my purse and bolted out the door heading an hour south to my parent’s home.

My dad had passed away.

He left this earth the exact same way he lived on it. Peacefully. After making his normal pot of coffee, he put on his jacket and prepared for his regular morning walk with his best friend and companion, Lola. Then he sat in his favorite reading chair, closed his eyes, and went into eternity with his Savior. My dad was 92, a Korean war veteran, married 63 years to the love of his life, my mom Nancy, father to Eric and I, grandfather to 8 and great-grandfather to 8 more.

To say we were all shocked is an understatement. Dad was always there. No matter what was happening, he faithfully loved my mom and his ever expanding extended family. It’s still very difficult for me to get a grip on the fact that my father is no longer here. As my brother and I spend these weeks with my mom to help her adjust to this new reality, we have been richly comforted by family and friends who have visited regularly providing meals and fellowship. Thank you to everyone. We are so grateful. This short video is from his celebration of life service. Following the ceremony, he was given full military honors at the Houston National Cemetery. The piano music in the background was played by his grandson at the service. The song is called ‘Redemption’. It was my father’s favorite song that my mother would play on the piano. We hope you enjoy.

Thank you Jesus for my dad. I’m comforted knowing he is at peace and enjoying the full choir of heaven with you.
